Repair Process For C20 Lido

Post by Ranger »

Unfortunately the day/date bezel on my C20 Lido has come adrift and is lodged on top of the 12 marker.

I've sent CW support a request for an indication of repair costs along with a photograph of the fault, however they've replied stating that their technician needs to inspect the watch before they can give me an estimate.

Is this the usual process for what is an obvious fault?

How do you know/determine its an obvious fault?

May very well be related to the way the watch has been treated by its owner, so IMHO its not unreasonable for CWL to make that decision on providing a quote.

I have no personal experience with returning watches to CW for repair, so take my comment with a grain of salt perhaps.

From what I’ve read on many occasions on this thread, it sounds fairly common for CW to say they can’t give an estimate of cost until the watch is in their possession, even for servicing.

While the fault may be painfully obvious from the photo, the cause and the fix may not be, hence the need to send it in first. And there may be other issues related to the displaced bezel not readily obvious.

Thanks for your thoughts, I guess I can understand them being cautious, I just thought they might be willing to give a ballpark figure before I go to the bother of sending it off.

I believe Steve (@Thermexman) had s similar issue with his wife's CW Charlotte Deco, with the surround to the small seconds sub-dial coming adrift (or something similar).

Maybe he will be able to enlighten you.

Unfortunately they won't even give a quote for something as simple as a bezel replacement without having the watch in their hands. By quote, I mean they won't even say "if the bezel just needs removed and replaced the cost will be £xxx". I have to admit that I think this is rather stupid and it has made me refrain from a repair.

I didn't see how old the watch was or if there are warranty implications but for that I'd be inclined to find a local watch maker to open it up and glue(?) It back on.

For a watch that's well past its warranty, I'd be finding a local watch specialist and asking them for a quote instead of CW.
Just my 10p's worth.

I don't think the day date window looks bad without the surround. I imagine it would be easy to remove the movement and just take the surround out without bothering to reattach it. Any watchmaker could do that. You might even have a go yourself, although you would need some equipment.

When my Wife’s watch did this, I sent it back and they fixed it for free. It then became detached a second time and so I glued it back on myself. A steady hand is required but it’s stayed in place ever since.

I'm bearing generous now but presumably there's scope for "oh and while we had your watch we noticed that XXXXXXXXXXX so the total estimate will be £ZZZZZ"? But from recent postings here I suspect you'd have to ask for a full inspection. :silent: I think I'd state as bleedin' obvious that I'd want them to ensure that no other dial furniture is about to detach itself.

I'm sure I've seen Soviet era watches with "ring hands" as the major part of the design. :problem: :problem:
C60 MKI, MKII, MKIII: "some",
C6 & C60 Kingfishers,
C600 Tritechs,
C63 "some",
C65 "some",
C4, C40, C8, C9, C3, C5, C20 & 23FLE
Some other brands

I think it looks better without the surround and I suspect an independent could whip the back off, remove the movement and remove the detached surround with no problems. I wouldn’t want that piece of metal flying around the dial though, so how likely is it the independent could repair damage to the dial or hands caused whilst the watch is in transit?
