nbg - May 2021 - a selection of #GODO
The launch of the new C63 Sealander range has prompted me to offer a selection all rounders that I am comfortable wearing for a wide range of activities.
My criteria for selection were no twisty bezel GMTs, no dive watches, no chronographs, WR sufficient for swimming and available on a bracelet.
In my view all are capable as an all rounder, meaning no requirement for the watches folk sometimes refer to as beaters. A couple are admittedly at the more dressy end, but still have equivalent robustness to the others.
With the exception of the most recent arrival, all have stood the test of time in my collection, with only the GS and Alpinist purchased in the past six years.
DateJust 16200:
An old school DJ that I think is more refined than the current 6 digit models. This one is also worn by Mrs nbg. I bought this one from money left to me by my late mother. Not worn as much as most of the others, but I enjoy wearing it on straps. The bracelet is currently adjusted to fit Mrs nbg and I can’t be bothered to add back links every time I want to wear it on the bracelet. Explorer 114270:
Whilst I certainly don’t subscribe to all this “one watch” nonsense, this is certainly one of my favourite watches and would definitely stay, if my collection was reduced to say three to seven (can’t bring myself to say reduced to three!). If I had to pick one watch to wear for say six months, during which time that was the only watch I could wear, this is the one that I would pick. Explorer II 16570:
Another favourite and along with the Explorer, in the indispensable category to me. Milgauss Z-Blue 116400GV:
A forum friend and I each bought one of these in the same month, just over six years ago. Having tried on the other variants, it was this one with the mix of blue, orange and green that struck a cord. There have been times over the years, when I have thought about selling it, but it makes me smile every time that I wear it. Grand Seiko SBGA001:
I think if you are going to get a GS get a Spring Drive. I don’t have many light dial watches. I like the point that no one pays any attention when you are wearing a GS, even though by my standards the dial stands out. Mrs nbg refers to it as my bling watch, in a sea of black dial watches, which are often my usual choice. The finishing on GS is, in my view, no less than that seen on the entry level watches from the likes of PP. Seiko Alpinist SPB197J1:
My most recent acquisition. I really like how the dial changes colour, depending on the lighting. I do reckon that the above fit the GODO profile. If anyone thinks otherwise, I would be interested to know which one(s) you would exclude and what makes it unsuitable as a GODO watch.
Thank you for reading. I now need to go and think what model from the new Sealander range to buy (although I think I may wait until a wider selection of dial colours is available... )

That's a brilliant collection of GODO watches - I wouldn't change a single one. Must be a pleasure to have these to choose among
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

I don’t think anyone with half a brain could object to any of those, Neil, so that certainly counts me in.
I will have the black dial Explorer, please. My address to follow via PM. Thank you very much for the generous offer.
Oh, misread post. Apparently it’s not a forum giveaway.

That DateJust looks fantastic on straps. Something about the old thin indices that plays well with straps. Also the big crown at 12. I don't see anything that doesn't belong. Although, technically, the Alpinist has a twisty bezel

Thanks for taking the time to pull this post together Neil. All those watches are fantastic. I also really like the white DJ even probably over the other Rolex.
I already have decided that I too will probably wait until later in the year to see what other colourways are released before buying a C63.

Neil, have to concur! Outstanding selection (no divers) and some great shots.
I had sworn no more Rolex but you have me wavering with that DJ....

A great sub-collection to your full SOTC, Neil, any one of which many a forum member would be proud to own.
You no doubt enjoy them and hopefully will continue to do so for many a year.
Now the $64,000 question. Will a C63 Sealander be joining them? (Please excuse me if you've given the answer in another thread; I'm a bit behind and catching up, on forum chatter).

Very nicely done, Neil. The 16570, in particular, always makes me swoon whenever I see one. Thanks for sharing!

A superb collection of GODO's and from the photos it looks like you have been doing a fair bit of GODO with them!
My favourite is still the Zeeblue, being partial to blue dials and something a little left-field myself...
It will be really interesting to learn your thoughts on a C63 to see how it measures up to the rest of your collection.

I really like the look of the Milgauss, I remember seeing one in an AD window not so long ago and the colours really popped. the green around the crystal was quite something. I'm not sure blue, green and orange could work any better.

Re: nbg - May 2021 - a selection of #GODO
A fine sub-collection no doubt Neil, practical, interesting and well-considered.
I do understand how and why the line is drawn here, but personally if James Bond can swing a Sub/PO/300m in a tux at a casino....that's a GODO
If I had to pick then the Explorer II. But then I have my eye on the C63 GMT white dial (Behave!). More sensibly, it's hard to argue with the proposition that Explorer I is THE GODO. Not a Rolex guy as such myself but gosh they have produced some icons. Plenty of evidence as to why here!

Thanks for the comments gents.
Interesting that the DJ seems a favourite. I do enjoy it, when I wear it - such a lovely clean white dial. Only small lume dots, but in my view, more than made up for by the raised WG baton indices.
Yep it does seem to go with quite a few different strap options, covering informal to more dressy. I have also been thinking of trying to source an Oyster bracelet to fit the DJ - to make it less formal than the jubilee.
All of the watches have their merits and I am fortunate to have them in my collection. Unfortunately if starting from scratch in collecting I doubt I would get to the same position, given the stupid preowned prices that now seem to be the norm.
As to the will I buy a Sealander?
That is a yes! Just not sure what one.
Initial thoughts were buy the white dial automatic.
That moved to the black dial GMT. My pattern of wearing, by typically keeping about three on the go at a time (with no winder), means I tend to favour a power reserve longer than the standard 38-40 ish hours in the usual ETA or Sellita movements. Therefore the new Sellita movement used is welcome. I certainly have no hang ups about the “not a true GMT” nonsense. I have never found it troublesome to alter the time whilst sat on the plane. Basically I like this style of GMT because it has the extra hand as a visual feature - not to tell me the time elsewhere (I can still add and subtract for that ).
Current thoughts are to wait for alternative dial colours for the Elite. It is something completely different and for that I will forgive the less than ideal power reserve.
