A snappier version of Sealander?

Post by strapline »

I was just giving some thought to the new Sealander range by CW. It's not a bad name for a range but, as someone alluded to on here previous, it seems like the people in the marketing dept of CW had the Aqua Terra range offered by Omega in mind when they thrashed it out. So, it got me to thinking...someone/something equally as well adapted to spending time on/in water as on land. There's a word for that isn't there? Amphibian!

No one would want the word 'amphibian' on their watch, it's almost as long as Christopher. But it is a nice sentiment. If, however, you were to revert to the Greek word 'amphibios', meaning amphi (both) and bios (life), not only do we get a very cool word, with that kind of Tudor Pelagos feel to it, but there might have been the opportunity to place it somewhere on the dial too.

I guess it's a rather pointless conversation after the event, but I still think it's a cool name for a range of watches of this ilk. What's the general consensus on the name 'Sealander'?

Personally, I’m awaiting their Zoolander range of contemporary, modern watches. Fingers crossed for a Blue Steel Elite!

On a serious note, your suggestion for a name makes a lot of sense,. The only drawback I see is that amphibian and amphibious make me immediately think of frogs - not exactly what one might want conjured up when marketing watches.

As for Sealander, I quite like that and think it’s a great term to capture the range.

I checked a while back and there's already a watch called a frogman. G-Shock

It must be really hard thinking of names that haven't been used, and which don't cause offence in some language.

A Vauxhall Nova, the Rolls Royce Silver Mist. I recently saw the Lexus UX. (Lexus sucks)

I reckon that whatever they’d called them, someone would think it should have been something else 🤷‍♂️

Land? Sea? Did anyone ever make a watch called the Atlantis?

I like Sealander - I find it amusing that it may be viewed as taking the rise out of Omega. :)

Mind you providing CW don’t bring out a limited edition Sealander for every month with an “R” that will be sufficient to differentiate it from Omega.

Amphibian. Nope. Other then Newts, I keep getting the following image.

Glad I'm not the only one that's thought of Zoolander basically every time I hear the Sealander name.
When CW releases the (inevitable based on early sales numbers) blue dial version(s), I will campaign tirelessly to ensure it is forever referred to as the C63 Zoolander.

...and the notion of frogs doesn't seem to have done any harm where the Rolex Sub Kermit is concerned.
