What WAS I thinking of?
The more eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that I am offloading a few of my CW watches, in a long promised effort to cut down my collection to the essential ones that I really wear.
Be Ruthless! I told myself. If you’re not wearing it much, it goes! So far so good. One sold, another out there and a couple more lined up. Then I came to this one.
I got as far as writing the sales description, and was waxing on about the sapphire caseback and the lovely decorated Sellita SW200-1 movement with its engraved rotor, perlage and Côtes de Genève. OK, the screws on the case back don’t line up, but so what?
And that dial!!
I can’t sell this. I had the same model years ago and sold it. I regretted it and took the opportunity to buy this one in October 2018. I picked it up cheaply, it was in definite need of a service so I had that done by CW. For what it cost me, even if I only wear it once a month, it’s staying. It’s the same model as the first watch CW sold.
Here’s the Archive Link
Enjoy the pictures...

Good man - if you enjoy owning it then keep it and have pleasure in wearing it when you do.
Trying not to buy any more watches...
Re: What WAS I thinking of?
My initial thought was ‘why don’t CW make watches like this any more’.
My second thought was ‘how long before a heritage series.......’

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
The answer to the first question, I suppose, is that they have moved on in terms of technical achievement and design language. In the Here Today, Gone Tomorrow world that the vast majority of goods manufacturers are trying to tap into, there is little hope for the model longevity we see in the likes of the Holy Trinity or the big hitters like Rolex, Cartier and Omega. You need considerable brand history and cachet to do that. Shoot me down in flames if you like, but the millennial mindset doesn’t necessarily want things that last, preferring instead the latest Must Have.
I think the second question goes along with it. Heritage doesn’t happen overnight, and for obvious reasons hinted at above a lot of modern manufacturers need to look to the future merely to survive and grow.
Fortunately as far as CW is concerned, the history of the brand has been in very good hands. Our very own Kip, aided by the technical wizardry of Richard (downer) and a little help from one or two others, has created the CW Archive.
I can’t think of any other watch company started since the Millennium that has anything approaching it. I’m proud to have contributed.
But – I don’t see any revivals of old designs in the near future. I’ll put my crystal ball away.

It would be a crime against horology for you to sell that Steve.

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
i completely agree but did wonder how many decades before a brand like CW can consider its past as inspiration. Three?

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
That's an elegant watch; simple but classic. Why oh why didn't CW stick with that badge at the 12 position, I think it's a nice bit of design. The 'London' seems a bit ancillary. But, I think that's definitely a watch work keeping, particularly as you have played catch and release once before...

I agree with Guy plus it is your second time around. However, what I am going to tell you might change your mind....Bahnstormer_vRS wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 8:23 pm It would be a crime against horology for you to sell that Steve.

Wow.
Those were the times when CW still knew how to place and design a brand name so that it looks good.
Keep it

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
I was looking at my modest collection wondering if some should be moved on. I know that my silver and white C5 Mk1 is going nowhere. Doesn’t get much wrist time but I love it when it does, A very elegant watch indeed

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
I still own my Mk1 C5A, and my dad owns a gold quartz Mk1 C5. Neither of them are going anywhere. The C3 and C5 will always be among the best designs CW has ever made.

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
Glad to see that you learned from the first time you made this mistake and sold it!
I had a similar experience towards the end of last year when I made up my mind to sell my white/silver Aqua Terra with blue hands and markers. I got it serviced, took all the pictures for the sales post, drafted all the sales blurb and then looked at the pictures again and realised what an idiot I was being for thinking about selling a watch I liked so much. So it stayed and has been my joint most worn watch of 2020 so far. The GS Snowflake was sold instead.

Re: What WAS I thinking of?
I remember that around that time i was looking for my first swiss made watch. I almost got the C5 but it was to classic for me and got the C3 chrono. Almost got the C13 chrono at that time.
