A Special Birthday Present
Our beautiful youngest son celebrated his 30th birthday last Friday, and on Saturday we held a surprise party in our garden with all his friends and family - he had absolutely no idea thinking all of his mates had deserted him by putting him off for months when he mentioned getting together! His face was a picture - and me, his mum, his brother, his fiance and his mates and close family friends all apologised for lying to him for months. He immediately forgave us all.
I asked him around 3 months ago what he wanted for his present and suggested that for a special birthday he might want to consider a watch. I sent him a link to Rolex and he identified a green OP 36. As rare as hen's teeth and when I spoke to my local AD he was honest and said it could be a couple of years. I explained that to my son and said that his gift would be an IOU for whenever the watch became available. Then, totally unexpectedly, said AD rang me with the good news - how the hell he managed it I will never know, but he did. His fiance sent us a video of him opening it on Friday - to say he was pleased was an understatement! No pictures I'm afraid - he now has the watch! But it is a very, very nice watch.
Hitting any milestone birthday is special but this was very special. The thought of him celebrating his 30th birthday was the last thought we had eight years ago when he was diagnosed with leukemia. After three years of treatment culminating in a stem cell transplant donated by his big brother (how lucky that he was a perfect match and no anxiety about trying to find a matched donor) he made a full recovery and is now in the rudest of health.
It was a very emotional and wonderful weekend.

Glad your son had such a great birthday, even more so given the health issues he has had to deal with. A Rolex OP as a gift - wow - I think the best I ever got from my dad was twenty quid for a few pints with my mates.

That's brilliant Bob! My kids will only get a Rolex from me when I die and they'll have to squabble over it
Good health to your son, I hope he continues to do well.

Brilliant! A really special birthday celebration all round.
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

Time and money? I’ve spent most of mine on booze and women. The rest I just wasted…

Ebels are a lot like women that lack a lowcut dress that zips up the side..neither gets the love that they deserve..
