You do know that you're going to end up buying both eventually don't you?

Best keep saving!

Both great watches Chris. I have tried on the GSSD a couple of times and it is a superb watch....but I just think that Cartier has the X factor. I've found in the past that square cased watches can be too small or too large (e.g. Tag Monaco) but the 35mm Santos sounds like it might be the perfect size.

Time to summarise and address some comments, round about anyway.

Do you FIND a grail or does it find you? The Santos fairly slapped me in the face in the end. X factor, history, uniqueness, style. Value of itself doesn't enter into it. The GS-SD was really fine, more "value" and I remain interested for a later time - great watch - but it's not my grail.

So the quest to save the (many!) pennies is on, likely into next year, The Year Of The Grail as I suggested in the opening post. Strangely now looking forward to the process. At least I have a very happy collection to keep me company until that happens.

You know, the more I look at different watches and different brands, the more I don't want to rush my choices. I haven't bought a new watch in over two and a half years. I've thought I've seen the next addition only to hold fire. I have a loose kind of shortlist for the next, down to about 5/6 watches. I'lll be really pleased if I can realise something towards the end of the year. Keep saving for the Cartier, the photo you put up in your OP is beyond splendid.

Quick FYI if folks are interested. It was THIS video that sealed the deal, by the oddly named Youtube channel "YoureTerrific". Really well done I thought. Man oh Man I am smitten.

As indeed you should be. Fantastic watch, fantastic company. I just wish that ruddy bloke on the video would learn to pronounce Santos properly. That is sooooo annoying. It’s NOT “sentose”.

Yes indeed, Steve. But I'll forgive him for that. Focussed on what for me were the pertinent issues and slam-dunked it.
