Nice read, with a glowing mini-review of the Mk3 C60.

Thanks Steve.

Started off well - in particular by correcting the myth that Rolex made it to the summit of Everest - but after that I felt it went a bit flat.

He mentioned Smiths, but then incorrectly said "Smiths faded away long ago". One could argue that it's not the same Smiths, but the intention has been to keep it true to its design and ethos roots. And very strange that he doesn't mention the PRS-25 as an option.

By the end I felt that he didn't have a great knowledge of watches other than Swiss or N American.

Most things are a bit flat compared with Everest.

However, please forgive me if I’m wrong, but although it is documented that Hillary wore his Smiths to the summit, and the Explorer was not introduced until 1953, I believe that a Rolex did actually make it to the summit.

In 1952 the unsuccessful Swiss expedition had been given Rolex watches (just for the Europeans, not the Sherpas) and Raymond Lambert presented his watch to Tenzing, who wore it in 1953.

Or so I believe.

He left the Rolex at base camp. There's a very good investigative article on it somewhere, where Rolex rephrase things to say it was on the Everest expedition, but the photos taken on the climb, and ascent I think, show the Smiths, not the Rolex.

As an owner of both, I have no axe to grind. But it is a great insight into the power of Rolex marketing.

Whilst I like some of the watches, Hammy, C60 etc. I don't really see them as Rolex alternatives. Decent watches but not really alternatives, title was maybe a bit 'click bait'!
IMHO of course!

Did Mallory and/or Irving reach the summit of Everest in 1924? Only they knew.

Did Hillary or Tenzing reach the summit first in 1953? Only they knew for sure despite rumour, investigative journalism, autobiographies and biographies.

Did Hillary and/or Tenzing wear/carry a Smiths watch and/or Rolex watch to the summit? Only they knew for sure despite rumour, investigative journalism, autobiographies and biographies.

Somethings are best left as mysteries.

Absolutely!

I didn't buy a Rolex Submariner nor earlier Smiths because a couple of guys had climbed a big hill on the other side of the World.

Brilliant!

And I didn’t buy a Speedy because some guy went for a walk on a lump of rock a quarter of a million miles away with one strapped to his wrist. Honest. :D

I didn’t buy either, or. Neither inspite of, nor because of.
