Hanowa automatic

Post by SimonGermany »

Well, a monster hangover on New Year’s Day and a speculative bid on eBay landed me this.

STP 1-11 movement, retail is €699, I paid €200 brand new, stickered up and in box, which seemed fair.

Sapphire display back, branded but otherwise crappy bracelet, non-screw down crown. The rotor and movement are nicely decorated. I think with a better bracelet it would feel like a very expensive watch, IYKWIM.

As it currently is, it has a Seiko 5 feel to it. It’s a pretty decent (cliché alert) daily beater.

The dial details, hands, indices look quite sharp. Good looking watch for not a great deal of money.

It’s sitting at -14 secs/day, which whilst not COSC levels of accuracy is definitely OK for a cheap automatic.

My Ward C61 runs -8 secs/day, for comparison, but is 9 years old.

Now on a Bund strap, the movement has settled down to about -4/24h.

Thanks Barnsie. It’s definitely a bit Marmite but I’m liking it too. Dare to be different and all that, hahahahaha

That looks good. I would consider getting one made that mirrors the cushion case shape. I think it would take it up a notch!

That's a nice alternative to an Aqua Terra. Congratulations and it does look good on that Bund strap.

Yeah, the angle makes the contrast between the case and strap look more pronounced than it is.

Alternative to an Aqua Terra? I’m not sure I would
go that far but, I tell you what, it’s better finished than any €200 watch has a right to be. Having had a really good look under the loupe it’s faultless, apart from the date wheel being marginally too high in the window.

Cheers all

^^^^ . . ..but wasn't the €200 you paid a January Sale bargain. Its certainly an attractive watch and from photos looks well finished.

However, your opening post suggests an RRP of €699 which is, dare I say, CW territory.

How does it compare on that basis?

Guy

PS> very much like the Bund strap, which is similar to a Dassari I have that doesn't seem to be available any more. Where did you get it from?

Hi Bahnstormer.

The Bund strap is from Sherp Leatherwork on Etsy. I can’t recommend him highly enough. Not cheap, not exorbitant but exceptionally well made. I have a couple of his straps.

As for the watch- well, no one buys Hanowas for RRP unless they’re drunk and in a Swiss airport. The tag prices are (much like Invicta) pretty irrelevant.

These are available on Amazon.de for €269 new.

Mine was eBay best offer and the seller accepted €200.

I can’t really compare with any specific CW as I’ve only had one, a 38mm Trident, but I can say:

the case and face are very nicely done,

the bracelet is poor in comparison (hollow end links and no micro adjust),

and the movement (STP 1-11) should prove as accurate and reliable as an ETA 2824-2 / Sellita Sw-200.

Is it a keeper? Dunno. It’s a bit different. I like things that are different and decent value. I think I’ll keep it for a few years then flog it on for maybe €120.

^^^^ Thanks for the strap details. I'll take a look.

Your observations on the watch in general are appreciated. Not really a CW comparable piece then.

Just a brief correction: the STP 1-11 is running absolutely bang on.

No one buys an automatic for its accuracy, but it ain’t half nice when a cheap one proves to be good!
