nbg - May 2021 - a selection of #GODO
Posted: Tue May 04, 2021 5:43 pm
The launch of the new C63 Sealander range has prompted me to offer a selection all rounders that I am comfortable wearing for a wide range of activities.
My criteria for selection were no twisty bezel GMTs, no dive watches, no chronographs, WR sufficient for swimming and available on a bracelet.
In my view all are capable as an all rounder, meaning no requirement for the watches folk sometimes refer to as beaters. A couple are admittedly at the more dressy end, but still have equivalent robustness to the others.
With the exception of the most recent arrival, all have stood the test of time in my collection, with only the GS and Alpinist purchased in the past six years.
DateJust 16200:
An old school DJ that I think is more refined than the current 6 digit models. This one is also worn by Mrs nbg. I bought this one from money left to me by my late mother. Not worn as much as most of the others, but I enjoy wearing it on straps. The bracelet is currently adjusted to fit Mrs nbg and I can’t be bothered to add back links every time I want to wear it on the bracelet. Explorer 114270:
Whilst I certainly don’t subscribe to all this “one watch” nonsense, this is certainly one of my favourite watches and would definitely stay, if my collection was reduced to say three to seven (can’t bring myself to say reduced to three!). If I had to pick one watch to wear for say six months, during which time that was the only watch I could wear, this is the one that I would pick. Explorer II 16570:
Another favourite and along with the Explorer, in the indispensable category to me. Milgauss Z-Blue 116400GV:
A forum friend and I each bought one of these in the same month, just over six years ago. Having tried on the other variants, it was this one with the mix of blue, orange and green that struck a cord. There have been times over the years, when I have thought about selling it, but it makes me smile every time that I wear it. Grand Seiko SBGA001:
I think if you are going to get a GS get a Spring Drive. I don’t have many light dial watches. I like the point that no one pays any attention when you are wearing a GS, even though by my standards the dial stands out. Mrs nbg refers to it as my bling watch, in a sea of black dial watches, which are often my usual choice. The finishing on GS is, in my view, no less than that seen on the entry level watches from the likes of PP. Seiko Alpinist SPB197J1:
My most recent acquisition. I really like how the dial changes colour, depending on the lighting. I do reckon that the above fit the GODO profile. If anyone thinks otherwise, I would be interested to know which one(s) you would exclude and what makes it unsuitable as a GODO watch.
Thank you for reading. I now need to go and think what model from the new Sealander range to buy (although I think I may wait until a wider selection of dial colours is available... )
