1966 Ingersoll

Post by biggus_richus »

Hi, hoping for advice and opinions.

My Dad has handed me the Ingersoll dive watch he got for his 21st birthday. He doesn’t wear it any more and nor does he want to. I think it’s lovely and it seems to be in good working order. A cursory Google suggests it has a Swiss FHF movement which is good news as I'd say it would unquestionably benefit from a service. And possibly a sympathetic clean and a new strap.

I'll pop by a local watch repairer to see what he can do, and I've yet to contact Ingersoll themselves, but was wondering what anyone else might do in my shoes? Just the service and strap? Possibly a lume pip? The bezel doesn’t ratchet, although I'm not sure it ever did. Any recommendations for online servicing?

That's cool. Good ol' dad.

I think you're on the right lines. Service, sympathetic clean, strap and lume pip. Nothing more.

Bezel may well be non-ratchet, just friction. Not unheard of for that era.

Curiosity, what case size?

Guy

PS> Keep the old strap for provenance.

Thanks Guy. The bezel measures about 37mm, 46mm lug-to-lug, 18mm lug width. It is very slim for a diver.

The strap is just a cheap aftermarket replacement, Dad thought it might have come on a bracelet. I was thinking a tropic or waffle strap might be of the period.
Rich.

All serviced, new crown and stem and a bit of a clean. Not keeping fantastic time, but good enough. Initially I put it on a Hadley Roma sailcloth style but as it dates from two years post-Goldfinger, and is clearly an homage, I was inspired to put it on a Bond nylon which, I think, suits it down to the ground!

Great to see it all fixed and running Rich.

I agree, the 'Bond' NATO is the way to go but possibly only a 16mm, if you can find one, for the authentic Goldfinger look; as mentioned in an article by Fratello Watches.

That looks great, really came up well with a sympathetic clean and service. I always think these and the old Smiths diver style look good on the period/fine dive mesh as an alternative and in keeping with the retro style.

Good result there Rich, it looks remarkably good, although I for one, think it looks better on the sailcloth.

Beg pardon Guy, but putting a watch on a narrower strap, IMO just looks silly, regardless of whether they did that in the movie. ;) One mistake, should not beget another...

I had trouble enough sourcing an 18mm RAF style Bond nylon (this came from Esprit Nato in France)! I'd argue that Connery's strap is more like 4mm too thin and I'm siding with Gary!

I've never been a fan, but will go take a look!

Very nice, and a lot more authentic than some of the modern Sub-alikes.

Personally I would always go for the correct strap width. :D

I too prefer the correct strap width for the lugs.

It was just a suggestion to retain authenticity.

I'll get my coat. :escape:

Heavily influenced by Soporsche and the Longines Legend Diver, I took the plunge on a WatchGecko Oblique Mesh Strap. I am not entirely convinced, but I think it’s growing on me...

That looks decent enough in a dressy kind of way, actually a really smart strap; although it wouldn't be my personal choice for day to day wear (which would likely be a NATO).

Looks great, will look even better with age, but then I am biased :D
Seriously, I do think it looks very good, mesh does grow on you. Maybe keep your eyes open for a used period fine mesh, they pop up now and again for not many £s.
