Citizen 8110 flyback Chronograph circa 1975

Post by timeonourhands »

Greetings,

I hope this post finds you well.

This is about my vintage Citizen flyback chronograph 8110,
which I acquired from Japan’s version of ebay, Yahoo Auction.

I love this piece and think it is amazing value for money.

Dimensions
The watch measures 37mm from left to right and 43mm from top to bottom.
The height is 13mm and the lug to lug width is 18mm.

The watch is compact due to its lack of protruding lugs and sits quite nicely on the wrist.

Sticking out bits
There are two crowns and two pushers.
The crown on the top left is used to rotate the inner tachymeter bezel
The pusher on the top right is used to start and stop the chronograph function and the final pusher on the bottom right is used to reset the chronograph function whilst it is in motion or in a ‘stopped’ phase.

The crown isn't the original crown. It should be marked 'CTZ'.
I have the original crown but it failed a waterproof test during its last service.

Day-date
The watch also has a day-date complication with the former being set quickly by pushing the bottom right pusher whilst the crown is pulled out to position one; the latter by turning the crown in the same position.

Dial
The dial is delightful. The inner rotating tachymeter bezel slopes down to a coil-like border. From there the dial levels out to house the lumed hour markers, after which the dial steps down another level to where the Citizen logo rests. This chronograph comes with a seconds counter and two sub dials. The top sub-dial is an hours counter and the bottom sub-dial is a minutes counter.

Crown jewels
The 8110 comes with 23 jewels and beats 28,800 times per hour (8 times per second).

Hands
The hands on this particular model are orange. They give the watch character and stand out against the black dial.

Criticisms
The only one I have is that the lume on the hour markers either side of the minute sub-dial doesn’t look as clean it does on the other hour markers.

Apart from that I think the watch is brill.

Hope you enjoyed the Citizen 8110.

That looks really cool.

I really like the smooth and rounded curves of the case; very organic.

The 'day' appears to be in, I assume, Japanese. Is Sunday in a different colour to help you?

Thanks, Guy.

It is indeed Japanese kanji with the other language on the day-wheel being English.

Sunday is in red but Saturday is black the same as the other days.

On other kanji day wheels, Saturday is sometimes in blue.

I have read about these in some detail, many think it is better than the Seiko of the same era. I like the octo bullhead version, just cause it is so unique,
but harder to find. Verticle clutch, flyback with day date, what's not to love? And at very reasonable prices. Great score!
Time and money? I’ve spent most of mine on booze and women. The rest I just wasted…
