A new arrival (Cler), but I know very little about them...

Post by gaf1958 »

As per the title, this arrived today. It’s in very, very nice condition, has what I would describe as a “Turkish” dial and has a hand wound mechanical movement in a 37mm stainless steel case (so not a chrome plated case - bonus).

It has “Cler Watch” on the dial, on the case back it states Swiss Made, all. It seems to be running quite well, seemingly keeping quite accurate time.

So... I can always open the case back to check on the movement , but Cler is not a brand I’ve heard of before. I’m assuming it’s probably a house brand or something like that, but if anyone has any info they can share that’s enlightening, that’d be great.

Will it be a keeper? Undoubtedly, as the low price I paid means it’s unlikely to fetch enough money to make it worth selling. Perhaps a better question is “Will it be a wearer?”.

Anyway, here are some pics.

Looks in nice condition Gary and a good size for a vintage watch.

All I could see for Cler was that it was a brand of the Serexa Watch Company per the link, that's all I'm afraid. They also had a brand called Lungylux but I think I prefer Cler!

I like it..an unusual dial...maybe an Art Deco appearance?..

Good Grief! Who dreamt that up I wonder!

But that Cler is unusual and attractive in its own way, any idea of age? Good find.

Well Nik, the design of the hands and hour markers would indicate fifties to me, but it seems in very good nick for that age, so who knows, it could be a later release. The twisted lugs could also indicate fifties, as they liked a good fancy lug back then.... I’m assuming they (Cler) would have been a victim of the quartz crisis, so that puts a cap on it I guess.

Interesting. The case back said 60's to me but I have not seen the like of that dial.

You’re right, the case back does look like a sixties watch doesn’t it...
This is all pure guesswork, as I have no facts to back it up!

Great find. It reminds me of old Omikron watches.

Probably FHF inside.

That's rather smart Gary.

I really like the oversized small seconds (bit like my DK15) and the case/lugs being twisted are very Omega Speedmasteresque (probably why you like it).

The hour markers and hands have a sword like profiles which, with the curve between them, make me think of your recent Kickstarter purchase.

Finally, I was about to write that, being vintage, the only downside to me is that its a bit small. Then I checked and 37mm is actually quite passable.

Enjoy wearing it.

Lovely watch and something very different

The inner "chapter" ring looks like a crown and actually reminds me of a French Galette des Rois
(http://www.chocolateandquinoa.com/galet ... hany-cake/)

I'm taking an educated guess that it's mid-to-late sixties.

Thanks Nigel,

That, together with Niks observations on the case back, means I’m happy to shift my initial age guesstimate firmly to the sixties. :)
