Re: Happy birthday jkbarnes!
Thank you for all the birthday wishes everyone. Spending the weekend with my wife and step-sons. She and I are heading out for a nice dinner in a bit.
Any other word nerds who can appreciate the gift she got me?

Happy Birthday, Andrew! Fellow word nerd present and accounted for!
You are probably the only person I can recommend this to: read Kory Stamper's Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries, published in 2017. She is a lexicographer at Merriam-Webster, and among other things, you will discover, much to my chagrin and disbelief (and the author's), that the "word" irregardless is in the dictionary.
Best regards,
John

It’s not going to be in my dictionary. I’m taking a sharpie to it if I see it in there!Bident wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 4:16 am You are probably the only person I can recommend this to: read Kory Stamper's Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries, published in 2017. I’ll definitely check the book out, thanks for the recommendation. Have you read The Professor and the Mad Man? It’s a must read if you’re into words and dictionaries. It’s the story of the writing of the OED and the prolific contributions made by a literal mad man. Check it out!
And thank you for the birthday wishes!

That is a great book! I've yet to see the movie (Mel Gibson, Sean Penn), but I heard it wasn't that good so might skip it.jkbarnes wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 1:29 pmIt’s not going to be in my dictionary. For what it’s worth, my parents very much recommended that movie. They mentioned it to me just last week, in fact.

Belated Happy Birthday Andrew
I was on holidays so I wasn't on the forum as much.
I hope you had a great day.

Belated happy birthday Andrew, I've been travelling so not around much and Sat 25th was my sons 9th birthday
Hope you had a great weekend.
PS A nice meal and a couple of drinks would definitely be preferable to 10 kids at a trampoline park which is where my Sat was spent.

Re: Happy birthday jkbarnes!
Thank you, sir!
Haha! We've all been there! I've done my time with the "kids' parties as major events;" even had one at a trampoline park with an entire pre-school class invited! I hope/trust you survived?
Thanks for the birthday wishes.
