A little qualification is needed, however. Ed White performed the first American EVA in June 1965 on Gemini 4.

Alexei Leonov, Soviet cosmonaut, had performed an EVA on Voskhod 2 some three months earlier. The watch dates from the height of the Cold War, so it was probably convenient to forget that.
