And…Breathe! It’s official. I think.

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

I believe I did actually retire on Friday. I would appear to have the card to prove it.

Of course, all this was supposed to happen a year ago but a few things got in the way. Having been asked to teach a few hours a week to take two exam classes through the course, I ended up from February onwards doing half a timetable as a maternity cover. Full days Monday and Tuesday and a half day on Thursday. So it has been a strange year and it hasn’t really been possible to wind down. I remain on the books but will only take the odd day of emergency cover if I’m around. I’m still going to help them with theatre tech and I will be doing some major proofreading for them two or three times a year.

I chose a bad time to try to launch my second career as a travel writer, didn’t I? Still, I’m hoping to kick back on a Greek beach in September (and sleep!) and then think about some field trips for my book ideas later in the autumn and into next year.

Watch wise, I bought the Meistersinger over a year ago as a retirement present to self. I enjoy wearing it on lazy days, and I think it will do very well on a beach style holiday, but I’m not convinced it’s the ultimate travel watch. I’ve had a few bonding issues with it at times, and it might still turn out to be a mover.

The Ulysse Nardin I bought recently is more useful as a general travel watch, as long as it doesn’t get wet.

If I do buy something to mark my second and official retirement, it will be something quite self-indulgent, hence the brand I have been looking out for the last couple of days:

Steve

can I ask why you are worried about your UN getting wet? Specification is 100m/screw-down crown. No problem for swimming - I would, except mine is on ostrich :problem:

Caveat: pressure check necessary once a year or so.

Happy retirement BTW!

Have a long and enjoyable retirement.
Hopefully, evething opens up for you, so you can get on with your plans.
I should really think about getting a plan in place for mine.
But after isolating with the wife for a week, I'm very much looking forward to working and golfing, till I drop.

Just that it’s an old watch, Nik. I just don’t fancy swimming with it, though I might be tempted to get a service and have all the seals checked/replaced. To be honest, most of the time these days I swim in a pool and I don’t wear a watch.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind wishes. :D

Yeh, get it checked over and the waterproofing sorted if necessary, then sell the MS Steve.
Deep down you know you won't be needing/wanting that when you have the UN for your travels.

100m WR, GMT and looks great to boot ... proper beach/boardroom/dinner watch 8)

Oh, and HUUUGE congratulations on your retirement. Enjoy it Sir

You made it to the club, Steve. Welcome and congratulations.

Totally top notch. May you have a long and fruitful retirement and second career hereon in.

That you have been working to one extent or another for the past year, on balance, ought to have been good as it means you have eased into retirement rather than arrived with a bump.

I'll raise a glass to you this evening.

Thanks, Guy. And it was definitely beneficial to my mental health during lockdown 3. I was going stir crazy, so bumping up my hours to 2.5 days per week really helped. Nice little earner, too.
