It’s challenging to level the bottom, if you are not cutting trough- the shape is easy

Edit can be done with a hand router like this

I’ve found some square shaped bottles that I think I’ll order and use simply so that the cutting of the foam will be easier. Also, the smaller dimensions of these bottles will allow for a far better layout - 4 bottles for spirits, 2 bottles for mixers, with easily enough room for four glasses and the shaker/mixing glass. With the depth of the suitcase, it looks like O can cut simple holes out to stand the jigger and some bitters straight up in the foam.

I’m getting super excited! I hope the finished product lives up to my expectations. Again, thanks for the tip about the Kaizen foam.

Six squared off bottles will fit easily under the cutting board

I know you said no to the ice idea, but what about some of the whiskey/whisky stones? Have them in the case and freeze them each day. And they don’t melt to solve any water issue.

Re: My summer project - UPDATE

It’s done! And it turned out better than I thought it would!

A quick summary of what I did:
  • Decorated the outside with vintage travel stickers
  • Suede-lined (well, fake suede actually) foam insert to hold spirit flasks, glasses, a cocktail shaker, and two little bottles of Luxardo cherries (a must!)
  • 4 of the flasks are etched with letters for the spirit they contain; the two non-etched ones will be for mixers
  • Travel themed cocktail napkins in the upper left pocket, a vintage bar tool set in the upper right
  • Four coasters in a side pocket, and finally
  • A cutting board
The suede will need some touch up glueing.

My wife and I have a four day weekend get away coming up - two nights in Annapolis, MD, and two nights in Ocean City, MD, with friends at their beach house. We will christen it then…..assuming I can fit it in my Miata with our luggage!

Very cool Andrew, reminds me of the 1930s and 1950s picnic suitcases I used to find in Greenwich Market, London. Great result!
