Solution to the expensive problem of watch collecting

Post by Uncle Dave »

It's been a long time since I have been on here. I brought my first CW's not too long after the brand started, I am guessing around 2008... I brought my first one for £160, and got the second one with a £50 off voucher for £90. I believe they are a bit more expensive now?

The problem with watch collecting, for me at least is that it is mainly buying stuff. Lots of research before you purchase, but it has always been something of a non-active hobby. Maybe I have been doing it wrong.

Anyway. I have recently brought a few basic watch tools and have started taking a few old watches apart to try and understand how they go together and perhaps even fix a few things. Mixed results at the moment, but it has been very rewarding.

There seems to be plenty of tutorials on YouTube, so I have been happily replacing batteries and trying to find fixs for some of my older, less valuable watches. I have taken a 26 year old Swiss Army quartz watch completely to pieces (not the movement) and managed to get it going again! The date dial was fouling the movement.

Does anybody else dable? Any recommended YouTube channels?

Cheers
Clive

I have watched Mark Lovick on the watch repair channel. I think his channel is actually a structured course.

I also watch Richard Perrett, and The Nekkid Watchmaker.

They all have better eyes than me. I need a 10x loupe to change a strap.

Exellent, thank you. Though it looks like Mark's structured courses are now behind a pay wall - $189 for 3 levels. $79 per level.

Welcome, Clive. It is good that you have joined us and that your hobby has taken an interesting new turn. Do pop over to the Member Introduction section and tell us about yourself and your watches. We like pictures, by the way. :D

I will soon. I was a member many moons ago, but I have forgotten my login details and changed my email address since then.

Just did a bit of research on the excellent archive and found I have;

2005 C3 Malvern Chronograph
2006 C5 Malvern Aviator
2007 C6 Kingfisher Diver Pro
2010 C4 BBMF
2010 C8 Pilot Mk II
2017 Trident 300

And I can now change my own batteries, and take the backs off and break things...

Thank you for the welcome.

Yes, I thought Mark charged for his course, but he has many uploads of general interest. I imagine you need a fair budget to really get started - decent tools, numerous different oils and so on, and expensive mistakes waiting to be made. I don't think watchmaking gives up it's secrets lightly.

I’ve dabbled over the years with simple tasks, more the maintenance and upkeep, rather than repairs and restoration. I’d like to learn more of the innards of mechanical watches but I don’t see myself really investing the effort. Much like my guitar playing.

^^^^ The Movement section of the CWArchive confirms the movement in each watch and, for quartz watches, which battery they use (not stated in the Owners Handbook).
