Vehicles for Adventure

Post by ciclismosam »

Many of us consider the watches in our collections to take on adventures. For me these are the Tudor Pelagos, Rolex Explorer, Sinn 856 S UTC, and now Bremont S300. However, what about our vehicles for adventures? Mine is the Toyota 4Runner.

My vehicle adventures are more of the twisty two lane type than the off road type…

This is Kranky. He's only been with us for 3 and half years but I reckon he'll be sticking around for a long time.

A rugged vehicle for the rugged terrain. I'm interested in the raised tent somehow suspended on the roof of the Toyota. Is that to keep you safe from any wildlife roaming about during the night (not something to worry about so much in Scotland apart from the old wild haggis  )

In my mind it is a two part answer.

One yes is an extra safety precaution against wildlife. Out in the SW/Western United States where I most often camp I am usually in some mix of black bear, coyote, mountain lion, and cougar territory. Of course how much this matters is debatable and I have also camped backpacking miles from the truck and pitching a tent, so not having that extra bit of precaution doesn't really stop me but I digress.

The second part is ease of picking a spot to camp/set up. I don't always, or often even, use official camp sites and will end up down a dirt/rocky track that can barely be called a road before picking a spot to camp out overnight. With the tent on the roof rack I don't have to worry about finding a flat spot without rocks, cactus, etc. Anywhere I can park and make the Toyota relatively flat is a place I can set up.

My do-it-all machine. My adventures tend to be on the smaller roads of the UK (grass down the middle is a bonus) rather than true off-road, but this bike is happy on the motorway or on a firetrack, or anything in between.

I have my next small tour planned for late June, and I have my fingers crossed that it can go ahead:

Hopefully you get to go on that next planned adventure! Really looks like a lovely way to get out there and see things.

Is the roof tent unique to the Toyota or is it a "one size fits all" setup?

Got this fella for the urban jungle. The 4 wheel drive is a must for ....not sure really. Below, is the worst blizzard it’s seen in almost 3yrs of ownership! It sat on the car for at least 20 mins! It was my day off anyways.

Mine is from a company called Front Runner Outfitters. I have their 3/4 roof rack as well but I know it can be done with other roof racks as well I'm just not sure how that application works for install.
