As requested! This is me getting to know the locals when I spent a year working as a base doctor for the British Antarctic Survey:

Fishing the home waters. Driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin. The area is littered with limestone spring creeks.

What a story, the picture your words painted was so sharp - and of course the photos were brilliant! A superb addition to the Forum. I have not managed further south than Port Stanley in the Falklands where the penguins were mostly Rock Hoppers and Gentoos. An awful lot warmer too!!

nbg wrote: Tue May 11, 2021 8:03 pm scooter - I started fishing when I was about 6 or 7. Local brook about 100 yards from the house; catching eels and brown trout. I have done a bit of estuary and sea fishing (my grandfather in Topsham had a boat) but it was mainly coarse fishing, with match fishing being a serious interest for about 10-12 years, until we moved from Devon to Hampshire. I then took up trout fishing. Although I haven’t fished much in the past couple of years I take the view that “once an angler, always an angler”.

@rkovars - Ice climbing; very cool indeed.

Neil, fellow angler here.. grew up by the sea so beach/boat from 7/8yrs then onto course later. Great to see your pic. I used to read the mag/paper religiously and remember the great match anglers around the time Ian Heaps and Ivan Marks I think (probably spelt wrong). Still fish when i can but thats only couple of times a year for last few... one of those things that whenever I go, think I should do this more often. Totally recharges me mentally and physically.
I watched both Heaps and Marks when the England team used the Exeter canal as a practice venue for a forthcoming world championship. Kevin Ashurst was another of the greats from that era. A few years later I ended up fishing against them in some of the invitation team events, at the time when sponsored teams were new to the sport. Great times, both the competitive side and the social side (both rather tiring :)).

^^^ Very cool, well if you were an angler of the era like me.. I was very proud to be bought an Ivan Marks float rod at the time and still have it in the garage. In great condition despite the very heavy use, in fact it (I) probably still holds the biggest Perch record for my then local lake in a comp I won on the day.

^^^ Ah yes the 13ft Ivan Marks Persuader. Had one of those, together with the 10ft swing tip ledger Rod. I reckon I still have them somewhere.

Here's me and big brother using our imaginations in 1973

One for Ferg, finally got a real car, but the real story is the haircut, I loved Jimmy Osmond so decided I needed his haircut, I didn't realise what a center parting was, so cut a V out of my fringe instead.

1981 Tottenham win the cup, can you recognise the player ? And how bad was the professional photographer !

Welcome holiday park Dawlish in 1989.
Old school holiday camp, bingo, fancy dress, discos, daily competitions, it was a great camp. I'm in the middle.

Dr Syn weekend in Dymchurch Kent, I loved that weekend, it was exciting and scary.
Not sure if it's still going, so I will check.

Steve, you should sell your work to a watch company for their dials. You would make millions, buddy.

Now you mention it...

They were both in the team in 1981.

I'm still not sure but looking closely you're probably right.

Ardiles is 5'7" and Glenn 6'.

Not so Glamorous, it's Paul Miller.
What a useless photographer they hired that day.

Also met Daley Thompson that year, bit more of a legend in my Eyes.
