Batons or Blobs....?

Post by missF »

So it's a pretty straightforward question - which do you prefer - batons or blobs?
But there's likely to be a bit more to it than that - why do you prefer the one or the other?
Are there watches which you think have particularly good examples of the one or the other?
Do they mix well?
The divers amongst you may have thoughts on this.

Bâtons, but only on the day that ends with Y in a month that contains a vowel.

Either really.

I have no preference.

Either, and both work quite well (Submariner?).

Batons over blobs for a dressier watch.

It's batons for me. Blobs take up a lot of dial space and feel cartoonish to me.
I like the shards on my Oris:

Either - I suppose I have a slight preference for batons, but it's not an issue. I am happy with index markers rather than numbers, and definitely prefer to avoid Roman numbers, but it depends on the watch.

I suppose if I was doing a pecking order it would be Romans and Bâtons tied for first, then Arabic numerals, followed by sharks teeth, followed by blobs, with the dreaded California dial bringing up the rear.

My instinctive answer is batons. I did a quick count to see if my collection reflected my instinct...

Batons 8 - 2 Blobs

I think it is more challenging for designers to get the ratios right on a blob dial and I reckon I've seen a few where they missed the mark.

A cursory glance at my collection would suggest batons by a country mile, but even better are batons with distinctive ordinal numerals (Oris Divers 65, CW C65, Pinion).

I've never felt that CW have got their blobs quite right because they're aligned with in inside end of the ordinal batons rather than the centre of them, if that makes sense.

You can't beat the reflections from a multi-faceted baton in my book.

Blobs can be nicely done on the rare occasion though. Think the chamfered type on GS divers, BP Bathyscaphe etc
