Reinventing the wheel

Post by magicman »

Hello there

I just set my bezel to time my chicken fillets, so I put the lume pip of the bezel, at the position of the minute hand, I presume this is correct method.
So when the minute hand reaches the 25min marker in the bezel, it's dinner time.

But, it got me thinking, would it not be better to have a countdown, so I set a 25min marker to the minute hand and when I reach the Lume pip, the countdown is complete.

As the only part of the bezel that is lumed, surely it would be an easier task in bad light, to see the minute hand heading towards Lume pip, and know times nearly up.

Without googling, I wonder if such a bezel exists.

Subtract 25 from 60 = 35

Set the bezel so that the minute hand is on 35.

When it reaches 60 your fillets are done. Bingo.

Flipped thinking!

Thanks Steve

I think under the pressure of having to cook for myself, my maths may let me down.

So I gave in and googled it, and see below.

there are indeed (many) countdown bezels eg the C11, but for diving you want to measure submerged time so an elapsed is more useful.

I too find countdown bezels useful. Sinn have many, as do other pilot watches.

My Nodus Sector Pilot also has a bi-directional countdown bezel.

I specified my Dodane Type 23 Quartz with a countdown bezel, in hours, when I bought it.

I did own one, never noticed the bezel, was a countdown version, probably because I hardly ever cook.

Sounds like you need to:

- use the buzzer on your cooker to time, or

- just note the time on your watch when you start, add your cooking time and you know what time it’s done by. :)

You are overthinking it. A bezel to time is no better than above. You still have to check when the time is up...

You immediately need to start thinking of -
... researching the watches owned/used by pro chefs
... a new watch with a countdown bezel
... another new watch with a chronograph
... a further new watch designed for professional chefs
... a "beater" watch for particularly intense cookery
... a GMT watch to use for tracking slow cooked meals across timezones
... an additional watch box for your cooking collection

As a certified WIS it pains me to admit that my Google Home has replaced my watches for timing cooking tasks, with the exception of grilling (only because I don't have one on the deck). Telling Google to set a timer is just so easy.

This cooking hobby sounds expensive, maybe I'll go back to microwave meals.

Then you'll need the Patak-Philippe Micro-ondes Chronographe (pour le curry parfait!) :D

The old time divers used the bezel in just this manner. They would calculate bottom time based on the USN dive tables during pre-dive planning. They would subtract this number from 60 and set the bezel. They would then keep track of decompression stops if needed on the bezel after the pip. This way there was no reason to reset the bezel underwater. This is why usually the 0-15 is marked in minute increments. They started accenting the first 15 minutes for esthetics.
