I thought the same Richard. Not sure the NF is easy to get hold of these days but I agree is a brilliant all-rounder. Easily to budget on the used market when they do crop up.kiter65 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:18 pm Thought it was just me getting itchy... first thing I did after work Monday was call an AD to see what was on offer. Not much help with any suggestions Steve, not very dressy but have you thought about a NF, not sure if that’s your cup of tea but it’s a good all rounder

Well, Steve...
GS 39mm with independently adjustable hour hand and GMT. It's 9F quartz of course (interesting in it's own right). In black with orange as here or blue with red.
A bit over the notional budget but not SO much. Had one on wrist, trigger finger very itchy. Gorgeous piece.

Well, another vote for a few Seikos..
First up, a Presage SPB093j1..features an Arita porcelain dial.. Next, a SAWR013..features an Urishi enamel dial.. And finally,a Longines Sector for an Art Deco look..

Tried that Longines Sector on-wrist today. Fantastic!

An interesting read and proposition Steve.
My usual suggestions would likely be ruled out of court in an instant but how about a Visitor Linden Calligraph
Unique, left field style, perfect 39mm case width, interesting handset that will hopefully give you inspiration when you're in your writing mood.

Re: In the Spring a young man’s fancy...
Thanks to everyone so far for some excellent and fascinating suggestions.
I hinted at "left-field"** in the OP. By and large you have come up with that. It's a difficult concept to define, but I don't want "just another dressy watch" or "just another" of any type. I want to avoid the "usual suspects"*** (another difficult definition) that we get in this type of thread - one reason I said no divers.
The Longines with the cross-hairs is attractive but I think I would soon tire of it. I think the colours are probably too bland for me.
The Seikos are interesting, and I especially like that one with the porcelain dial. I couldn't find much about the movements, though. Aside from a few £30 quartz Casios, the only Japanese watches I have owned were an Orange Monster and a couple of Makos. Rock solid diver/beaters, but the movements were "adequate" - didn't hack or hand-wind. This would need to be significantly better at the price.
Grand Seiko GMT? Lovely, but quartz.
**Left-field? Looking at my watch box, the Tank (although an iconic watch) is quite left-field because of the shape, the huge numerals and the cabochon. The C65TD is a bit left-field - it's a diver, but it's sufficiently different not to be thought to shout "Look at me, I want to be a Submariner!" The MS is definitely left-field...not many of us have a single-hander! The Speedy isn't left-field - it's just a classic. So left-field for me is "a bit different from the herd". The kind of watch that has people saying "I wish I could pull that off" - from the style PoV, not the size. Again the Tank and the MS are prime examples of this quality.
***Usual suspects? No disrespect to some excellent watches, but I'm thinking Black Bays, Oris divers and the like that are often suggested when this type of "mid-range" thread is launched.
Top runners so far? Still some kind of Nomos, or a porcelain Seiko (Chuck's Red XII example!), or wait to look at the Sealander.
No hurry, I'll sit on it. Thanks for the help so far and keep the suggestions coming, please!

Re: In the Spring a young man’s fancy...
Thank you, Guy. Left-field in spades, which is good! But as soon as I saw your and Gary's Visitor watches, I knew I couldn't live with the hands (esp. the minute hand). The indices don't work for me either.Bahnstormer_vRS wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 9:00 am My usual suggestions would likely be ruled out of court in an instant but how about a Visitor Linden Calligraph

Re: In the Spring a young man’s fancy...
From a brand that has been on your “never really considered” list.
Different case shape.
39mm.
Integrated bracelet that has a quick change function.
More than sufficient WR.
The pic is of a blue one. Other dial colours are available. A discontinued model from a respected brand.
May be difficult to find in budget.
Other dial colours available. Neil

^^^Thank you, Neil.
The ML is nice but...
The ML is nice but...
- The lugs are not quite to my liking (a bit like the Tudor NF)
- The dial looks like it's trying to be a RO or Laureato, and I'm not keen on the bezel design (a bit Constellation)

Not so great on a cloudy day, or at night, or indoors. On the other hand, never needs winding and unlimited water resistance!

Re: In the Spring a young man’s fancy...
I'd second the UN if you wanted a left field GMT that offers a most elegant solution. I paid less than 2k for mine 15 years ago and SH prices for VGC are still in that ballpark for the 40mm case size.

Re: In the Spring a young man’s fancy...
Just seen a couple in the UK for £2.5 k on Chrono24.
Nik, any chance of a wrist shot or two and a quick idea of how it works, please? E.g. is the hour hand independent or does the home time window need to be changed? The brand has a great reputation but again not mainstream, which is a bonus!

That would be brilliant - PM sent.
And that is the exact watch I was looking at on C24!
