^^^ thanks Chuck.
A few taken at reservoir level, later in the week.
The water level was the lowest in about the last 20 years. The pic at the end was taken from the water’s edge; about 100m from where the level would be when full. A drop off in height of 50ft. Neil

Hike from Valentine south to Belmont along east shore of Lake Macquarie. Managed to just beat the rain.

Re: Pics from the walkers
This weekend was supposed to be my annual trip to Keswick with a mate. I’m never sure if it’s a walking holiday with drinks, or a drinking holiday with walks. We usually camp but with summer being packed in the lakes we decided to go later in the year and booked a basic B&B for three nights. I’ve been looking forward to it for months, especially since last years didn’t go ahead for obvious reasons. That was until I had a phone call on Tuesday, my mate had tested positive for covid and the trip is off.
So these were supposed to be photos from the top of the fells, instead I packed my backpack with a packed lunch and headed out on my own from home. My wife had made plans thinking I’d be away so I’ve had a day to myself with no pressure to get home because we have to go somewhere and do something. Anyway a 14 mile walk out to Scammonden water across the dam which the M62 goes over the top of. In one photo taken from the bridge, you can see Stott Hall farm. This is the subject of many tales, some say the farmer refused to sell his farm to make way for the motorway so they built it round him. The Beatles song Fool on the Hill is rumoured to be about him as well. Sadly none of this is true, the farm lies on a geographical fault so the motorway couldn’t have been placed there anyway. I’m sure many of you have passed this going over the Pennines.

^^^^ I remember being stuck in the traffic jam on the M62. I looked across to Stott Hall Farm thinking ‘I’m the fool’.

That part of the M62 is the highest motorway above sea level. It gets bleak up there in winter but they always seem to keep it clear of snow and ice.
Sadly that bridge became a place for people who saw no other alternative and the motorway often used to shut due to someone standing over the railing. They’ve modified the bridge now with a 10ft high cage type structure which is almost impossible to climb over.

I never found that credible, they would just have served him with a Compulsory Purchase Order if the land was needed. There was an article about the farm in the Sunday Telegraph magazine some years ago, it was listed as one of the 10 least desirable places to live in England! Apparently motorists crashing into the farm is/was a regular feature of living there. The Pennine Way crosses the M62 very near the 'highest motorway' sign.some say the farmer refused to sell his farm to make way for the motorway so they built it round him.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

Re: Pics from the walkers
After an fabulous meeting with Jamie at Wessex Watches en-route home I stopped off at the Avebury stone circles and henge. Recognised as a World Heritage Site for it's outstanding Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape. The stone circles and henge monument are particularly unusual, not just because it is the largest stone circle in the world but also for the fact that it is the only stone circle with a village built partially within it. A henge is the name for a circular Neolithic earthwork, consisting of a bank with a ditch on the inside. The henge at Avebury is exceptionally large at just over three quarters of a mile in circumference and it would have been originally up to 29 feet deep. The large outer stone circle contains two smaller inner circles within it. The stones themselves are of a local sarsen stone. One of the stones tells a grisly story. Excavations by Alexander Keiller revealed the skeleton of a medieval barber-surgeon who was crushed beneath the stone when it was being buried by those who wanted to remove the pagan stones from view. Recent geophysical research has revealed the presence of an exciting new feature, a square shaped stone monument, possibly the earliest feature in the stone circles demonstrating that Avebury still has many more secrets to give up.
My dog had to explore every stone.

^^^^ Nice weather for your visit Richard.
I was there on a visit two weekends ago, whilst staying with my brother who lives only a few miles away. It was overcast and with heavy showers.
An impressive site nonetheless.

Re: Pics from the walkers
Last week, staying near Oban, we came across this bridge, known locally as the bridge over the Atlantic which goes to the Isle of Seil.
Back when wearing a kilt was illegal, the locals would cross the bridge and change back into kilts when on the island.

Re: Pics from the walkers
Not exactly a walk today through the rolling countryside but it was just as rewarding, a visit to the Milestones Living History Museum, Hampshire, UK. I highly recommend it, educational and fun. Even has a fabulous Edwardian pub serving real ales, only downside was the pub was closed as it was hosting a private function. Still it’s a good excuse to return.
