The more I live with my watches, the more I realise that we tend to overthink the whole category thing.

A watch is a watch is a watch...

Of course I have watches I wouldn't take camping or hiking (too fragile), I have watches I wouldn't jump into a pool with (lack of WR). I have watches I wouldn't wear with black tie or similar dress codes (not restrained enough).

But on the whole, I wear what I want when I want. A far cry from the days when I used to fret about matching leathers and wearing only "dress" watches if I came within 50 feet of a jacket and tie.

"Field watch" gets me. I have no idea really, but to me it sounds military (G10 type). Simple, smallish, black dial, white lume, highly legible?

Anyway, life's too short. Wear what you like and like what you wear. Since I turned 60 I've turned into Jenny Joseph (purple). Google if you don't know*

*Lindsey, I'm sure you WILL know! :D

Something I’d add is that I see a sports watch as built to take some abuse, whether it’s going to actually get that abuse or not. I also think tool watches and sport watches overlap a bit with the sport watch trending towards a bit dressier than the tool watch.

I feel like we need a Venn diagram to illustrate this!

I'm very reassured by all your answers - I genuinely thought that I was missing something being a girl!

Can the JLC Reverso still be classified as a sports watch? Originally designed for Polo after all

I define watches by their purpose. A watch mechanism which can accurately dice time into fractions of hours, minutes and seconds remains one of the most notable complications used in sport.

Say's who?

Let's be honest, it's all watch manufacturers hype that has been driven by the desire to sell watches. It's a modern thing. CW rightly say somewhere in their bumph, that once upon a time all watches were 'dress watches', based on what some now claim is what a dress watch should be, for example, looking like a Grand Seiko. It's all nonsense. Pretty much all watches can be used for any task (Deep see diving is an exception, I guess? I can't think of others) and it's just a personal choice what you choose to wear your watch for - maybe an excuse to buy more than one watch!

Years ago, I scampered and slithered up Ayers Rock wearing my trusty everyday wear, a Pulsar quartz, that I guess looked sort of dressy (makes me shudder now), but I was really just copying the example of Hilary, who conquered Everest wearing a dress watch!

It's a good opening question. I've always wondered why Roamer classified this 1960s (presumably) model a 'sport' watch. What is sporty about it?!

It must be the quintessential sports watch for the uber-wealthy.
What do they wear when skiing at Klosters I wonder?

Ask yourself what Dennis Compton would have worn against the Australians, before turning out for the Arsenal at the weekend.
Nothing less that a gold dress watch, I imagine.

This is about where I sit on the question, thanks Steve.

Although to me a sports watch ought to have a function of one sort or another over the regulation two/three hands that come with the ability to show the time.
