Re: The Picture Thread
I bought this vintage circle cutter from an old tools dealer located to Norwich. It came with a receipt - someone paid £20 for it back in March 1960 somewhere in Essex. I found this fascinating

Re: The Picture Thread
Fascinating indeed, Kari. But not £20.
20/- was the old UK currency before we went decimal in 1971. Here's a Wikipedia article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C2%A3sd
The symbol /- means shillings, and there were 20 of them to a pound, so it was another way of saying £1. Still a decent sum in 1960 of course when you could buy a new Omega for about £40.

Re: The Picture Thread
Thanks Steve for clarification - I also thought after posting that would have been very very expensive tool

Re: The Picture Thread
Kari the convention with many retailers in UK pre decimal times was to express prices in shillings, even if over £1.
So 20/- was the way of expressing 20 shillings, rather than expressing it at £1 (there being 20 shillings to the £).
Yes I remember pre decimalisation, but no I am not old enough to have been buying anything in 1960!

So it was not yours originally, Neil
Don't understand the telephone number notation either. How one calls to number "DOMinion4012"?

Re: The Picture Thread
Not sure if that was a serious question - so in case it was....

Re: The Picture Thread
Thanks, it was a semiserious question
Tried to google that up but couldn't find an answer How do you know that DOM is 366? What is that 'inion' in the middle?
