Firefox reports CW Forum as insecure

Post by richtel »

Interesting to note this morning that Firefox was objecting to the CW forum, reporting that the site security creds were self-signed. I needed to add a security exception to Firefox's permissions to go through as normal.

No problem here. Firefox under Ubuntu.
There's always time for one more.

My wife's PC using Firefox is showing the message:

This connection is not secure. Logins entered here could be compromised

The little padlock alongside where you enter the www. address has a red diagonal line through it.

My Apple using Chrome is showing:

Your connection to this site is not secure.

You should not enter any sensitive information on this site (for example, passwords or credit cards), because it could be stolen by attackers.

Currently using Firefox 52 (I believe that is the latest version) under Fedora and I'm up to date with all OS updates - no issue with the forum.

I did see this Firefox warning one or two days ago while booted up to another Linux OS, but it was not in respect of this forum.

Seems to be a new security thing in the latest Firefox. Lots of new changes, some of which might be disruptive or inconvenient.

CW should start looking into making the forum a more secure site under https protocol, though. Lots of sites and forums have moved to that already. My FF browser is set to request https by default if that option exists, and it doesn't for this forum.

Google has been pushing SSL for a while and it's the next step to push site owners down HTTPS route.

Lots of sites are now showing as insecure on login pages to highlight the perceived weakness. Go to other sites including WordPress login pages and you will probably see similar messages if the site doesn't have an SSL certificate.

Interesting that right now, the forum isn't trying to use https- perhaps we were seeing some preliminary changes in motion.
