Broken second hand

Post by Lkrm »

 Holiday drunken bbq disaster. Putting watch back on after bbq and few beers dropped straight onto patio. Massive whack and second hand has come loose.

Will this be covered by the CW guarantee?

^^^^ Doubt it; Accidental damage.

That's what your House Contents Insurance is for.

Sorry to hear this, nothing worse.
Is the watch still ticking away and other hands working and keeping time ?
Hands are just pressed on so it could be a reasonably quick fix and I'd figure it shouldn't be too big a bill.

I had a hand issue with my watch (The chronograph hand moved off of the midnight position depending on which way the watch was being worn). I contacted CW customer services and it’s being repaired by them. Not sure about whether my home insurance would cover that as no identifiable cause, but not overly expensive to fix with CW

Thanks Ferg and Andy. No ticking it seems to have stopped. There was a loud thud on impact with the paving stones ,so I suspect it may well be a little more serious that just the hand coming loose although praying only minor. Email sent to the CW repairs team so will have to wait and see once it has gone back. Love this watch and no 71 of 316 which coincidentally matches my year of birth so hoping repairs won’t be too expensive.

You will probably have an excess with your watch. If you decide to make a claim, it might make more sense to get a new replacement if offered, rather than pay for a repair, but it would be best to send it back to CW to get a quote, I think.

Good luck.

Thanks. In the UK so will get it returned to CW for a quote.

Apologies, but my reply was a touch 'short' and I neglected to consider whether there might be other, unseen, damage (as others have suggested).

Whilst many mechanical watches have an element of 'shock protection' they are nevertheless finely tuned, precision instruments and there's a limit to the amount of shock they can withstand.

As you have done, best to contact CW to arrange a repair, and get the watch to them. Also, read up on your House Contents Insurance to see if the repair is covered, whether you have an excess etc. (much as you would do after having an accident in your car).

Worst case, it may need a new Movement. Alternatively it may need a couple of parts.

See how you go from there. Good luck.

Thank you Guy. No need for an apology.

It did seem to be a fairly heavy fall based on the noise made on impact and so will have to wait and see the full extent of the damage.

I half expected the Crystal to be cracked when I picked it up.

Hopefully just some new parts rather than an entirely new movement.

In the words of the old public information advert “I wish I’d brought my brolly”. “ I wish I’d brought my Bradner.”

Blimey, must have been quite a 'whack' but we know how intricate and delicate some pieces are. Fingers crossed for a positive resolution for you.
