CW Slogan (with apologies to Mike F)

Post by Stoowoo »

Do we really like it? Mike F says we/you do.

I don't. I think the brand deserves better and have told Mike F too many times and he has come back. like the gentleman he is, with lots of arguments/evidence to say we/you do

Ingeniously English. Unsurprisingly Swiss.

The first part is assertion, and whilst being true, now 'We' have dropped DYOR it cannot be substantiated by photography alone (or the reliance on dear readers to read ad copy). To the second part my reaction is "Why (is it unsurprisingly Swiss - slogans can't rely on you having seen the ad they sit beneath or at the end of)?"

CW makes (Swiss) watches that are very bit as good, if not better than many famous brands, many of who share the same movements. But none of them are 'Made in Maidenhead. Built in Switzerland'. Of course, Bremont are designed in Henley and made using Swiss parts and creative pricing, but that's another story...

I just think there is a line out there that sums up wot we lot all know. Effing brilliant watches, with all the best bits that the Swiss do but with (remember most horological breakthroughs happened on these shores) British design (it's how Hans Wilsdorf started Rolex innit?). Discuss?

Most slogans are rubbish, as is most marketing hype. I have largely trained myself to ignore it. I certainly don’t think that that particular slogan lends itself to overanalysis. British company building in Switzerland. Simple.

Well... I take no exception to the slogan. I think it's alright as it goes. It's simple but with an air of refinement. An alternative might be:
Effing brilliant watches, with all the best bits that the Swiss do

Actually I don't have an issue with the slogan at all, infact, in the sea of brands and watches, I think that it works quite well.
Indeed if it warrants a discussion thread then it has kind of worked.

As far as the following statement is concerned:
Bremont are designed in Henley and made using Swiss parts and creative pricing
That's not strictly speaking true!
BREMONT design, manufacture, assemble and test their watches in Henley.
However, there are a couple of components that they buy in, e.g. swiss ETA movements but they then change a couple of components and calibrate them to +/- 3 spd.

You could certainly make a case for it.

For what it’s worth I like it.

I'm perfectly happy with it too.

Certainly not stopped me buying CW watches, nor making me spend my own valuable time writing to Mike France about it.

Besides that side of life, writing reams about stuff, is not my forte. Perhaps its yours.

What would you suggest?

I see no issue with the slogan. It can be interpreted in several ways, but simply says British designed watches- Built in Switzerland.

Not seeing the need to analyze it.

Yes! I think this is the direction CW needs to go in, with Liam Gallagher signed on as celebrity spokesman!

Liam Gallagher signed on as celebrity spokesman!
Well, he already has his own brand doesn't he?

Like many, I tend to gloss over slogans. At least it's better than the too widely seen "British designed" which is usually marketing speak for "Made in China".

Not my 'strapline' I'm afraid gentlemen; I lifted it from the OP. Just found it rather funny myself. Like I said, I have no issue with the slogan.

The slogan is Ingeniously English. Unsurprisingly Swiss.

Yet the "English" part seems to get interpreted as "British":

I mean this as absolutely no criticism of the posters above, including my esteemed Admin Team colleagues, as that is the interpretation I generally would expect from people in England or from outside the UK. England and Britain become conflated. But those of us from the best parts rest of the UK don't always read it like that. It can read as "the ingenuity that comes specifically from England but which isn't prevalent in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland", which is clearly a bit divisive.

To me (and of course I can't help but be biased here) it would be stronger to position CW as a British brand rather than an English one. The leading role that CW are taking with the new Alliance of British Watch and Clockmakers would seem to support that too.
