A smaller C63 Auto?

Post by jkbarnes »

There’s been a lot of discussion on the C3 Sealander thread about smaller size options. In looking at the overall design aesthetic of the Sealander, and thinking about size, I immediately thought of my first (and still favorite!) CW, the Mk1 C65 Trident Vintage. In comparing the Mk1 version to the C63 Auto, it offers a lot of the same look in a slightly smaller size.

This begs the question, what makes the former a dress watch and the later a sport watch? Is it the different hands? Or the different lume? Same water resistance, screw down crown, crown guards...and yet they do come off as different types of watches?

Thoughts?

Personally I always wondered why the trident vintage was classed as a dress watch. I came close to buying one and it would have been a GoDo watch for me...

I agree. I just think they didn't have a place to put it and didn't want to create a category for 1 watch. Now that they have an entire sub-collection they separated them out.

I can't see any real difference either. GADA, GODO....whatever!

Both those watches strike me as great everyday watches, neither dress nor sport. One thing I like about the one on the left is the very light touch on the dial. The minute track is very feint, which I think adds to the elegance of the watch.

I agree, and I hadn’t picked up on that right away. Also, the batons on the C65 TV are more subdued. Collectively those make the watch face simpler, understated, and as you say, elegant.

The more prominent batons and the minute track highlighted with the minutes give the C63 a different look - more aggressive maybe? More sporty?

I came close to buying a C65, but got caught up in logogate. The C63 is more 'sporty' I agree but neither is a dress watch to my mind. Both excellent everyday or one-watch pieces.

These are good points. Also, a subtle detail that lends the C63 a sportier air is the broader “shoulders”, the lugs right where they meet the case. On the C65 they curve in more and appear slightly thinner than the C63’s. A minor detail but it helps differentiate the subdued/dress look from the sporty for me.

That C65 is only a dress watch because that is where CW put it on their website...

In reality it’s just a normal non dive, do anything watch.

I am not aware of any proper dress watch that has a crown guard.

Ahh! Good eye for detail. I see that now.

Apparently a 36mm may be on the cards but it will depend upon the success of the 39mm. I suspect a 36mm is a while away though. More colours is a more likely development.

I think I’d be down for a 36mm watch, but it would need to be a cool color to offset the small size. A small pop of color in my wrist!

Like a certain other manufacturer's series of 36mm three-handers...!

Both developments to the Sealander range would be welcome.

The C65 is vintage inspired, where the C63 is very much more modern. I love both and very much enjoyed the C65 I had, but it didn’t match my wardrobe.

Neither are dress watches in my opinion, both are sporty in their own way.

Both lend themselves to the one watch guy category.

A dress watch to me is small (36-38mm by modern standards, 33-35mm vintage) no lume, no complications apart from perhaps seconds subdial or date, white face, black leather strap and the lack of
any sporty flourishes like crown guards or minute track, or rehaut. Also must be thin.

Funnily enough I don’t really like what I define as a dress watch and wear a Certina DS2 small seconds (with gillochue dial) when the occasion calls
