Tax/Customs question when buying from NY

Post by Buck327 »

Hi! I’m new to the forum and I just purchased my first Christopher Ward watch. The C60 Trident Pro 600 and I’m super excited. This is my first watch that cost more than a couple of hundred dollars and also the first time I purchased anything online from another country. I read that $800 is the threshold for customs/tax but I’m not really sure what that means. I’ve also read that I can get a bill for those things from the shipping carrier. Can anyone provide me with any information as to what that entails or what I can expect? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Jimmy

I think it would all get auto calculated once it proceeds through customs. Guess you wouldn't pay UK vat but would pay your local costs.

Unless second hand and then I think it's more a combo of declared value etc

Edit maybe ping cwl customer services as they must have good experience with USA shipping and will have come across this many times no doubt

This question comes up quite a bit. I have no direct experience with customs duties because both my CWs fell below the $800 threshold.

Take a look at both these previous threads about it. Lots of good info there.

It seems to be a little hit or miss..there is a $800.00 threshold..above that amount, your carrier should charge you import duties..sometimes they do, sometimes they don't..it's a guessing game...you s/b prepared for the worst, imo..good luck hunting!!..

Welcome to the forum Jimmy/Buck327. I'm guessing from your post that you're from NY and importing the watch from the UK. If so then you are correct that the threshold for import duty for any item entering the US is $800. Duty will have to be paid for any purchase above that. DHL should contact you once the watch enters the US. It should go to US customs in NYC. Expect to see an email or perhaps a text from DHL.

Ideally this email/text from DHL will just be an invoice - Pay the invoice and you're good to go.

If they send you a request to fill out a form detailing the value of parts of the watch then my advice is to contact CW customer service by phone and highlight this. Remember that the UK is currently four hours ahead of the US. CW will contact DHL on your behalf and fix the fact that DHL have lost the paperwork. Then you should receive an invoice and be good to go.

Hope this helps.

If the purchase price was any amount over $800 and it was shipped via DHL, you will be sent an invoice from DHL to pay for customs fees and their processing fee. I received all of the communication from DHL via text messages.

It may not be the case for you, but I bet a few watches will be bought with the stimy cheques!
