It's very hard to get watches inexpensively at auctions.

Yes and No!
Your best bet is to always go to an auction (yes I know it's not possible at the moment), however, in my experience the lower value watches are, generally speaking, not worth bidding on because of the commission.
However, higher value watches it's more interesting because often you bidding with/against dealers who have to factor in their margin so, as a private buyer, you can generally get a good deal.
Two things I learnt...
  1. Always go to a viewing day or turn up early on the day to be able to view the watch, provenance, etc.
  2. Do your homework on market pricing, factor in the commission and then come up with a max. figure to bid to make it worth while/better than buying from a dealer.
