6.5" wrist, C60... 38mm vs 40mm

Post by heffergm »

So: 6.5" wrist. I originally ordred a C60 in 38mm. Then started vacillating between it and the 40mm. Mainly because I tend to the think the 38mm looks a little "scrunched up" for lack of a better description. The fact that the 3 o'clock index disappeared on it kind of irked me. Obviously not a real problem, but ordering online tends to accentuate these sort of odd considerations.

I'm curious what other folks with similar sized wrists think of the 40mm, especially with regards to how well the lugs follow the wrist curve. Mine should be arriving shortly, so I figured I'd check on the likelihood of having to return it in the meantime.

My wrist is of a similar size and the 40mm is perfectly fine. I haven't tried a 38mm trident but had a previous mk2 which turned out to be 43mm, and it felt uncomfortable after extended wear.

In fact, I think the 40mm actually wears quite small and is really comfortable on the bracelet or any other type of strap. I always find that with a bezel included in the diameter and in my case a black dial, it will always make the watch appear smaller to the eye too.

I have a wrist size very similar to you.
In my collection, my most worn watches are my MK2 Trident Vintage C60 38mm, C65 Sandhurst (also 38mm) and my C65 Dartmouth (largest one at 41mm).
I have found that exact dimensions of the case diameter are only part of the story when thinking about wrist size. Thickness, weight, lug length and lug curve all come into it, so does the ratio of bezel width to crystal diameter. For me the 38mm C60 does feel a little more “dumpy” and top-heavy than the others; likewise the Dartmouth’s narrow bezel makes the watch really fill my wrist. However, I can happily get away with both. The Sandhurst is probably the best fit for me.
I still have my MK3 C60 40mm and I like the way it wears. It is not getting the wrist time it used to but that is more due to my tastes ebbing towards a more vintage look rather than modern.
I would suggest you try one and see how you get on with it.

I've a 6.5" wrist and wear a 38mm C60 pro 600 on a daily basis.
IMO, it's a little bit too short. It's fine but I also wear a 40mm Rolex and changing from the 40 to 38, feels odd. But changing from 38 to 40 doesn't bother me.

So maybe it's the chunkiness of it or just a fool's eye but I was thinking of getting a 40mm CW.

Best thing is to try it on.

Thanks for the opinions. It's on the way, so we'll find out soon enough.

In the meantime, I realized I specified the wrong measurement for my bracelet resize... I'm assuming they send the links they removed along with everything so I can take care of it if I decide it's going to stay?

Yes, they should do. They did with mine anyway!
Don’t forget that the newer clasps all have 10mm or so adjustment built in with their glide-lock type mechanism. If the links don’t get the exact fit, you might be able to get close enough on the glide-lock. If not, any competent local jeweller should be able to add one of the spares for you.

I also have a fairly small wrist, the 40mm and 42mm both wear slightly on the small side imo having tried them both. I'm sure you will be absolutely fine with the 40mm.

So it has arrived...

Initial impression on sizing, it's pretty much perfect. The 38mm would have been fine, but the 40mm I think works better as a dive watch. The lugs curve beautifully and perfectly follow the taper on my wrist, and leave a bit of space at either end, definitely no overhang which I can't stand.

I'm generally not a bracelet fan, but this one is very good, and the sizing is actually correct. I'd assumed the resize on the website was actually requesting a bracelet size, which is usually 1-2cm > wrist size, but having entered my 16.5cm wrist size, it's come to me perfect, and there's adjustment on either end to go tight or loose.

Obligatory close wrist shot, which to me always seem to make whatever the watch is look bigger than as it appears in real life:

Distance shot which I think is more how it looks to me. Any dissenting opinions on the sizing?

You've hit the sweet spot there with the 40mm.

Top notch.

imho the height combined with it onyl being 38mm makes it too stubby. go 40mm

Oddly, the more I've worn it, the bigger it's looking to me. I ordered a 38mm to compare. Either the 38mm will get returned or the 40mm will be up for sale, we'll see.

Oh, I need to follow this. I'm currently wondering if I should go 38 or 40 too (same wrist size as you). The only thing putting me off of the 40 is that I LOVE the red bezel variant, but that's not available for the 40mm.
