What's your accuracy?

Post by Hughly 741 »

Just want to get an idea of what kind of accuracy other people are seeing woth their automatic watches. Could you share the model and accuracy of your automatic watch?

My Bulova Snorkel has lost 2.9 seconds in 358 days... Not bad.

Image

I tend to only time watches when I first get them (and sometimes not even then), but some other examples have been my hand cranked Gemini Speedy which gained 1.2 seconds per day over a 14 day check.

Image

My titanium PO ran at +0.4 seconds the last time I checked it. It's orange sister that I sold to CeeGee was running at about the same or better.

Image

This 40+ year old beauty runs at about +8 per day...

Image

My Blue C9 runs at +9 and my Olympics SMP AT +2.2. Most of my watches seem to run in the -8 to +11 range with a couple in the +20 to +30 range (they're not expensive watches by any means) but they're accurate enough not to bother me too much. Even my birth year 1958 hand cranked Edox runs at +15 or so.

My latest watch the C65 SKK is running at about +2 seconds per 24 hours, my C60 Trident Red FLE is always -2 seconds per 24 hours, my C10 runs at +4 seconds per 24 hours, my C11 Titanium Elite COSC runs at +1 seconds per 24 hours, my C65 SWS runs at +4 seconds per 24 hours and my C600 IPK runs at +2 seconds per 24 hours.
All excellent in fairness ;)

LUM-TEC B18 Bronze running at about +1 sec/day. Also a Seiko 007 that is about +5 secs / day but self regulates face up overnight.

C60 Trident Pro 600. Only had it running for just over 6 days and it's currently gained 18 seconds in that time so averaging around 3 seconds a day at the moment.

I looked at the graph of timings against real time over the year. It's a bit like a very shallow sine wave, almost time neutral in the warmer months and losing very fractionally during the cooler winter months.

I suspect that if this was worn (keeping it a bit warmer in winter) it would probably have lost no time at all in the last year. Mind you 2.9 seconds in a year (.008 seconds per day) is not to be sneezed at. A thermocompensated version of this movement would be pretty amazing...

It also has the smoooothest second hand - 16 beats per second.

Thanks for all the input! I have mainly stuck with Quartz watches before just for convenience sake, but am now thinking about getting a few automatics. Speaking to a few friends who have automatics, I was a bit taken aback by their accuracy (or lack thereof). It's good to see that others are seeing pretty good accuracy even after a few years operation.

My C60 trident 600 is running at around +1/2 per day. Less than half a second per day is great !!

Hi I have the C60 Trident-Pro 600 which is running at +10 seconds a day? I thought this was excessive and called customer services this morning who tell me that +/- 10 seconds is normal for a auto watch? Cannot say I am very happy with this!

I am describing one watch. I have other watches with the same ETA movement that run at +8 ! There is a wide variation in accuracy, but I love all my watches. I just set them weekly. Lots of things can affect accuracy, including even which way up you leave it at night. It often feels like more of an art than a science. If I want perfect time I check an NTP app on my iPhone.
