Forum Rankings

Post by Kip »

Since ianbylth has revived the topic and it has been a couple years since we had the discussion...perhaps it is time to revisit this.

The team really has not had any discussions about this so everything Is wide open for suggestions.

As I have mentioned before...Hans would have to endorse and approve any changes, but I think he would be open to opinions on this matter.

Here are the current rankings and post counts required.

Newbie 5
Junior 30
Senior 60
Expert 200
Senior Expert 250
Guru 300
Senior Guru 400
Forumgod 800
Senior Forumgod 1000

Feel free to offer your suggestions and reasoning for levels and names.
Kip

Isn't the required post count a bit low, considering there are now people with counts in the five figures?

Either that, or you will have to come up with something that is a step up from a deity to acknowledge and honour such super-contributors...

If its possible, how about looking at the total membership and the respective individual post counts, then select some reasonable ranges in order to plot a standard deviation curve (I think thats the right name). That way you can see what proportion of the membership sits within each range, and from there perhaps come up with post counts/names that more accurately reflect the current membership/post count numbers.

If this makes no sense whatsoever forgive me, but I think I know what I mean in my own head!

I know what you mean but I think it will be dominated by the Newbie rank and very few at the top level. If you go to Members and click post count to sort them (and again to sort them descending) you will see that a large number of people join but never post anything. It is not until you get to page 72 (out of 130) that people with 1 post start showing up.

Good point. I guess by defining "active members" it would eliminate the one posters, however, with a bit of thought and agreement there are probably many ways in which this dilemma can be sorted...

Perhaps to double up the numbers for each stage might be reasonable

That way folk in their early Forum status dont suffer too long but the jump ups take a little more active involvement

Having achieved 10,000 posts downer should be allowed the freedom to choose his own Forum ranking/title (if he wishes to do so). This has been allowed to other Forum members in the past, with far fewer posts.

At a 140 posts I don't consider myself a senior or near expert at all... Still a junior I think.

Maybe something like this:
Newbie 30
Junior 100
Senior 250
Expert 500
Senior Expert 750
Guru 1000
Senior Guru 2000
Forumgod 3000
Senior Forumgod 5000
Supreme Forumgod 10000

I don't think any of the most active posters are that bothered about rank, or would want a title. Perhaps, though, deification arrives a little too early.

I don't really care for titles such as expert or guru I think on the forum it should just mention post counts.or perhaps a more suitable title would be" forum member"

Just checked the post count (hadn't realised you could do that) and find that I make it on the second page.

Would 500 posts from someone who only ever posted things like 'nice watch' 'strap looks great' be truly reflective of the title 'Expert'?.

Expert in what?

Scrap the rankings entirely.
